In honor of March being Women’s History Month, I wanted to recognize a woman who truly left this world making it a better and brighter place. My Grandmother, Lucille Mosbacher, was a saint to say the least. She raised 14 kids and created a beautiful family that continues to grow still to this day. I am in fact, the youngest of the 40 grandchildren that she had. While I did not get to spend as much time with my Grandma Mosbacher compared to some of my much older cousins, that certainly has not changed the influence she has had on me. As I grew older, I began to learn so much about her, who she was and the love and compassion she had for others that went far beyond just her family.

In 1998, my Grandma and another woman from the church she went to opened up “The Mother Teresa Maternity Home” in Placerville, California. The home was a place for expectant mothers ages 18+ for all races, religions and socioeconomic status, to move into and live comfortably while they carried through with their pregnancy. Many of the women had not come from an easy life. The home provides shelter, food and resources to aid mothers in their pregnancy journey.

These women often came to the home because they were left to fend for themselves, were single and had little support, if any, from family or friends.

Women living in the home are provided with the tools needed to become a fully equipped and caring, loving mother. Opportunities are made available to them while living in the home to continue their education or make their way into the workforce and learn how to provide for themselves and their baby. The expectant mothers can live there for the duration of their pregnancy and up to three months after giving birth. Getting to see my Grandma’s legacy live on through this home is truly inspirational. While she is no longer with us, she still is today helping women change their lives. Women are so strong but sometimes we still need a little extra help and that is exactly what my Grandma provided, she had a kind, gentle and giving heart and spirit. I am proud to carry both her middle name and last name with me as I go about my own life and make a name for myself.

My Grandma Mosbacher has impacted the lives of so many women over the last twenty-plus years that the home has been operational.
