Holiday Do’s and Don’ts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

It is now the festive time of year, and everyone is cheery and merry. As the holidays rapidly approach, it is important for traditions and planning to go smoothly. It’s hard to keep up with all of the holidays at once. Towards the end of the year, we finish strong with Saint Nicholas Day, Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucia Day, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Omisoka, and more. Whether you celebrate one, all, or none, these holidays bring a lot of hustle and bustle throughout the season. Here are some holiday do’s and don’ts.

Do: Go grocery shopping ahead of time! I cannot stress this enough. Before these big days, the lines will be insanely long. The worst part is if you only have a few last minute things, and you still have to endure the crowds and lines.

Don’t: Become obnoxiously wasted on spiked eggnog (or any alcoholic drinks for that matter). You want to remember all of the fun and food that goes on.

Do: Wear something festive if you want. Gone are the days where sweaters were “not cool” — now, the more holiday spirit the more merry the atmosphere! Add a bit of sparkle, and if your sweater says something on it, it can be a great conversation starter.

Don’t: Bring up politics over dinner or family gatherings. Times have been stressful and politics usually end up in massive family debates. Especially with this year’s elections, people might have very strong different opinions, which can make a family holidays turn into very awkward debates.

No matter what you do or don’t do, make sure to have fun this holiday season! Make time for yourself and your loved ones. Follow these simple pieces of advice, change them up to your own family’s liking, and just enjoy the holidays.

I'm 21 years old from Manteca California and majoring in international relations at University of California Davis. I'm aspiring to become a lawyer! I love Bhangra, family, friends and event planning and during dinner one night I decided with my best friends why not have a bhangra competition at UC Davis. Fun fact about me, I love to travel, and my immediate family is in 14 different countries.
