Fall Scholarship Program: The Pantry

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Interested in free money for your groceries? You still have two days to win a $250 grocery certificate, offered by The Pantry to three deserving students this fall quarter. All a collegiette needs to do is turn in an online application by this Saturday, October 24th, be interviewed by Pantry staff members, and they may be eligible to win! If you miss the deadline, don’t fret: The Pantry offers this scholarship every quarter.

What is The Pantry? This student-run organization that completely relies on community donations was founded out of a growing concern for UC Davis students having to juggle the increasing costs of tuition, books, and living expenses while pursuing a university degree. Located in the basement of Freeborn Hall, Room 21, The Pantry was created in order to lessen that financial burden on students, providing them a resource for basic necessities such as food and toiletries. Its goal, stated on their website, is “to provide non-perishable, high-protein food for UC Davis students struggling to pay for meals…[along] with basic necessities such as toiletries, soap, toothbrushes, etc. in order to live a dignified life while working to obtain a UCD degree”. You can go and visit The Pantry anytime from Monday through Friday from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm and Monday through Thursday from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

Though you need to present a UC Davis ID to have access to their services, anonymity is an important aspect of The Pantry’s services. Foodstuff and other items’ “costs” are on a point system ranging from 1 to 3 points. A student can take away as many as three meals or items per day, or a net worth of 3 points per day, depending on each item’s worth in points. So why not take a pit stop between classes today and save up on this week’s groceries?
