As summer vacation starts to approach, I am catching myself thinking more and more about what I want to do instead of actually studying for the midterms and finals I have left. Since this will be my first summer as a college student, I’m hoping to make the best out of it, and hopefully you are too! Here is a list of ideas of what to do this summer.

1. Hit up the beach

The best part of summer is getting to go to the warm beaches here in California. Make it an all-day event! Hit up the boardwalk, local shops, make/buy some food and have a picnic at the beach, swim/have fun in the water, and maybe even bring some sports balls so you can have a game with friends. I know some beaches have bonfires, so you can bring some s’mores supplies and eat them with friends at night. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen!

2. Go to an amusement park

I’m personally super excited to hopefully go to Six Flags this summer with some of my friends. Check out some local amusement parks in your area! Since I live in Southern California, I am close to Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm, Six Flags, and Disneyland. I know that there is Six Flags Discovery Kingdom close to Davis, so maybe check it out! Also, if you don’t feel like spending a lot of money, look for some smaller amusement parks close to your area. By where I live, there is an amusement park called Scandia and it’s only $27.00 to get in all day and ride all the rides you want.

3. Do some volunteer work

This is so fun; there’s honestly nothing better than taking a few time out of our lives to give back to those who need help. During summer we are free from school responsibilities, so there is definitely time to give back. I recommend looking at VolunteerMatch to see of any organizations or events around your area that could use some help. Also, a quick Google search is definitely helpful!

4. Go on a little vacation with friends

If you and your friends have some extra money to spend because you saved up money from the job you had during the school year, you could totally plan a little vacation. One summer my friends and I bought some cheap airplane tickets and went to Seattle. It was pretty inexpensive because we planned ahead, got an Airbnb, and ate at cheap but good food places. If you’re from Southern California, you and your friends should take a road trip to Las Vegas or spend the night at an Airbnb by the beach. If you’re from Northern California, maybe take a trip to San Francisco or stay out in a cabin on Lake Tahoe.

5. Get an internship/a job

Now I know you’re probably thinking, “You said that like my parents,” “that’s not fun at all,” or “this is suppose to be a time where I can relax.” These are all very valid points. However, I think I’m most excited about this. During school, I’m very focused on my work and the clubs I am a part of. However, since all of that is on hold, I’m able to get to working in a part-time job again or maybe in a paid internship. Not only will this experience boost your resume, but hopefully you’re getting a job or an internship in an area you actually like and that will benefit your career in the future. Also, if it’s a job or a paid internship, you will have money to do other fun things on your days off from work!
