One of the best parts about living in California is the access to so many great destinations within an hour to a three-hour radius. This past summer, I explored parts of my state that I never previously had considered going to, and it was great because they were close enough that I did not need to find a hotel or Airbnb to stay at in them. I have put together five of my favorite spots, complete with activities and restaurants, to make for the perfect day trip.

1. Napa & Sonoma

California’s ‘Wine Country’ offers so much for a memorable day. Picnicking at Sonoma Plaza is a must! There are a lot of great restaurants around this area to order food from or bring your own. Napa is great for a lovely outdoor dinner from one of the many acclaimed restaurants there.

2. Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is perfect for a seaside outing. It gets a little chilly, which is why I love to take advantage of the cozy outdoor seating at the Ritz Carlton Hotel that is available even if you are not a guest. There are blankets, fires, and a beautiful view of the ocean. Clam Chowder is also a must-have while in the town – many local restaurants and cafes serve it!

3. Pacifica

Pacifica is another great Northern California beach town, with a lot warmer weather typically. Picnics and water activities are all a lot of fun here. There is also a Taco Bell right on the beach, which makes for the perfect beachside meal. For dinner, I highly recommend going to one of Pacifica’s fantastic Peruvian restaurants. My favorites are ‘Puerto 27’ and ‘La Costanera.’

4. Marin & Sausalito

Past San Francisco are some gorgeous and scenic cities. Marin is home to one of my favorite beaches, Stinson Beach, and Sausalito has a cute downtown area. The views of the hills and sea are breathtaking, making it a great place to bike through. I love to walk around Sausalito with ice cream from one of their local parlors!

5. Snow Day in Arnold

During the wintertime, my family enjoys driving to Arnold, California and other surrounding cities to see a coveted glimpse of the snow! Arnold is an excellent alternative to the well-liked and very busy Lake Tahoe. There is a cozy coffee shop called ‘Bistro Espresso’ that is ideal for hot drinks post-snow.
