The Best Party Games for College Students

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Welcome back to school, collegiettes! Before we hit the books and jump into midterm season, take the chance to get with some friends and play some board games in the first few weekends of the quarter. Below are some popular group party games to whip out during your downtime!

Cards Against Humanity

No list of party games is complete without this dark adult version of Apples to Apples. For those of you who haven’t played before, it’s a relatively simple card game where one player, the judge, reads a black card and the other players respond with their funniest white card. The judge picks the funniest white card, and the corresponding player collects the black card. The player with the most black cards in the end wins.

Exploding Kittens

A trending card game for people who adore cats and explosions, Exploding Kittens is a mash up between Cards Against Humanity and Russian Roulette. It’s the perfect light and fun party game. You stay alive as long as you don’t draw an Exploding Kitten, and the last person alive wins!

Spyfall

A game of bluffing and secrets: all players receive a card specifying a location, except one player who receives a spy card. The spy must try to keep his or her identity a secret, and figure out the location. Meanwhile, the other players ask each other questions to try to expose the spy in their midst.

Taboo

Taboo is similar to charades, but there’s a lot more pressure. Players try to guess a word described by a teammate, but they can’t use a certain set of words as indicated on the card.

Avalon

Avalon is a deduction game in which players play quests in the name of King Arthur. The game is split between a good and evil team. In order for the good team to win, they need to complete three out of five quests. The evil team can win by either ruining the three quests or assassinating the good team’s Merlin player at the end.

Mad Gab

This game is simple, but super fun. The player says a string of unrelated words that sound very similar to a real life phrase, and team members must try to guess the phrase. For example, “Sell My High Yak” = “Salma Hayek.” The team with the most cards wins!
