Ask Her Campus: Better Ways to Spend Your Valentines Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching! Soon, couples will be making special romantic gestures toward their special someone. People will watch sappy chick flicks and rom-coms on Netflix, and stores will run out of chocolate faster than you can say “sweetheart.” There’s just no better way to celebrate the holiday.

… except Valentine’s Day shouldn’t just be for couples. Yes, of course there are single people (February 14th is also known as Single Awareness Day), but on the Day of Love, you can always show some love to other, non-romantic people who are important in your life. Like your family: they support you during your college years, and they welcome you with open arms when you go home for the weekend. Your family doesn’t have to be limited to just your parents or grandparents, but can be anyone who you’re really close to, like best friends. Other important people in your life can include roommates, sorority members, close study buddies, etc.

Don’t forget that you are also very important. You know best what you do and don’t like, you give yourself a pat on the back when you ace that midterm or essay, and you encourage yourself to pursue your dream. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, it’s okay to take time out to treat yourself to something or to pamper yourself. The more you love yourself, the more respect you’ll have for yourself.

There are so many ways to show people you love them, no matter who they are. Whoever is important in your life and whoever you care about, those are the people who deserve recognition Valentine’s Day weekend. If you’re looking for creative ways to share the love with those who matter, here are some ideas from the staff of Her Campus:

1. Go for a walk.

2. Have lunch or dinner downtown.

3. Have a DIY night.

4. Watch a movie, either in theaters or on TV.

5. Host a sleepover.

6. Spend a day at the spa.

7. Play a game: card, video, board, or outdoors.

8. Get a bunch of people together and hang out.
