5 Ways to Be Charitable Without Leaving Your Desk

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

It’s almost time for Thanksgiving, and what better way to celebrate than to get into the spirit of giving? Here are 5 ways you can help others right from the comfort of your own desk.

1. Grow your hair out for cancer patients.

Locks of Love and Pantene are great organizations that use your hair to create wigs for cancer patients.

2. Play games while fighting hunger.

Practice your vocabulary and donate rice at FreeRice.com.

3. Donate your clothes from your house!

Shyp will pick up, box, and send your stuff for $5 and the lowest shipping rate possible (or for free during the summer!)

4. Join SocialVibe.

Help support your favorite causes and organizations, like the World Wildlife Fund, suicide prevention organization To Write Love On Her Arms, Charity: Water, and more. To raise money for your cause, complete certain brand activities (like posting a message about a certain brand on your Facebook page). Sponsors will donate money to one of over 40 nonprofits.

5. Shop online from responsible and charitable retailers

Getting a new wardrobe while empowering youth or providing clean water in developing countries? Sounds like a double doozy!

Hi, my name is Wendy Hwong and I am currently a fourth-year Communication Studies and Cognitive Science major at the University of California, Davis. In my free time, I enjoy long talks and study sessions in hole-in-wall coffee shops, hiking scenic trails, finding foodie hubs, DIY projects, reading, blogging every so often, and trying to stay fit. On my campus, I am involved in the Professional Sorority and Fraternity Council for Phi Alpha Delta, am a notetaker for the Student Disability Center, and run the publicity campaign for Relay for Life. Writing is one of my passions because it is one of the best ways I have found to connect with others and gives me the ability to create something completely original.
