Why You Should Continue Wearing Your Masks After Being Vaccinated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

As of April 27th, 2021, CDC stated that “fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks outdoors, except in certain crowded settings and venues.” As I saw the news regarding new guidelines for COVID-19, I remember scrolling on my Instagram and Twitter and being shocked at peoples’ responses. Some argued that although they are vaccinated, they are still going to continue to wear a mask because the virus is still existing. On the other hand, there were many people cheering because they never wore a mask in the first place.

At the end of the day, the U.S. can never be united when it comes to protecting itself against the virus. Although I am fully vaccinated, I will continue to wear my mask and you should too. If people never believed in wearing masks in the first place, nor getting vaccinated, how would we know who is safe to be around? I don’t feel comfortable taking off my mask outdoors because I never know who might be taking precautions.

Even if the vaccine helps protect us, it is not guaranteed that we will never catch COVID-19. It is not smart to enforce non-masks guidelines because wearing masks help slow the spread of the virus. Not to mention, it also helps individuals from catching different strains of COVID. I don’t believe that things can be back to normal however I believe that this is our new reality. It is important to not only protect yourself, but to protect others as well.
