Why Everyone Must Watch These Medical Shows Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Medical shows have been airing on television  for a long time starting from MASH, ER, Scrubs, to what I believe to be the most popular currently Grey’s Anatomy. Usually the ones who want to become a doctor watch these medical shows and the ones who want to go into law watch shows such as How to Get Away with Murder. However,I believe this year, no matter where your interests lie, everyone should watch Grey’s Anatomy and The Good Doctor. It is not necessary if you have not seen the previous seasons of these shows because the current season for both of these shows cover COVID 19. Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy and season 4 of the Good Doctor beautifully covers the struggles, pain, and emotions of doctors, health care workers, patients, and their families in this. It shows the reality of how real doctors and health care workers are struggling day and nigh for weeks at the hospital trying to save the lives of their patients. There have been many protests and complaints about wearing masks in public and about social distancing. Many people have not followed the rules of social distancing and still keep throwing parties and meeting up with friends which has resulted in continuous rising cases in the USA. Hopefully these current seasons can provide some insight into the lives of health care workers and can help people learn to appreciate their hard work because this year they are the real superheroes. It might also encourage others to wear masks every time they step out of the house and social distance out of respect and kindness for them.

Furthermore, season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy brings back many previous characters who died on the show before to show the concept of souls watching over us. Many deaths have occured this year due to COVID and it provides a sense of hope and comfort to all the families who have lost loved ones this year that their loved ones are watching over them. There are angels all around us. As someone who lost her grandfather this year, I know the extreme pain and guilt that comes with the death of a loved one. Watching this season provided me with some hope and relief that somewhere out there my grandfather is happy and watching me. Television can provide us an outlet to escape from our reality and this season completely provides that – whether it is sending a message to everyone to be kind and respect our doctors, health care workers, and essential workers or providing comfort and hope to those families who have lost a loved one this year.

This year is a year everyone needs to work together, be kind to each and every single person, and more importantly, take care of each other. As stated by my favorite doctor, Meredith Grey, “Find your people and keep them close. Because when you’re at your lowest, those people get you through.”
