With papers, presentations, and the dread of finals week approaching, I’ve been gravitating toward ridiculously upbeat music to keep my mood and energy up. This installment of underrated bands features mostly indie pop artists who deserve way more buzz. Hopefully, listening to a few of these tracks will prevent you from transforming into a grumpy, caffeine-dependent zombie.

Like the Misfits?

Listen to: Parquet Courts

If you appreciate some rowdy, punk music, you must give Parquet Courts a listen. Their reckless vibe may briefly remove you from your reality of sleep deprivation and nonstop assignments. I personally love listening to them while walking to campus to feel like a rebel (until I enter the classroom and return to normalcy).

Like Two Door Cinema Club?

Listen to: Darwin Deez

You need to see them live. Do yourself a favor, and put it on your bucket list now. You will quote everything lead singer Darwin says and ogle at their hilarious dance breaks in between songs, guaranteed. I bet you will even memorize all their lyrics without intending to.

Like the Smiths?

Listen to: The Drums

The Drums have a very special place in my heart, and they might just take tenancy in yours as well. Lead singer Jonny Pierce is the ultimate king of awkward and would definitely beat Napoleon Dynamite in a dance-off. The group’s 80s-inspired tracks are perfect for waking you up in the morning or basically anytime if you’re as obsessed as I am.

Like MIKA?

Listen to: Miniature Tigers

Miniature Tigers will get you grooving with their quirky lyrics and captivating melodies. Their upcoming album Cruel Runnings, which drops on June 17, will definitely be playing nonstop on my Spotify account.

Like Foster the People?

Listen to: Guards

I first discovered them when they performed at FYF Fest last summer, and they’ve been a regular on my playlists ever since. Most recently, the band has been featured on the Endless Love soundtrack.

I'm a fourth year, creative writing major who enjoys thrifting, idolizing David Bowie, and consuming inane amounts of hazelnut coffee.
