Top 5 YA Books To Take a Break With

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

With finals just around the corner getting a break seems like a distant dream, but fret not midterms are mostly over and thanksgiving is only two weeks away! So here our my top 5 Young Adult book recommendations to help you get through these stressful times

1. The Fault in Our Stars

Written by New York Times bestseller (and my personal hero) John Green, The Fault in our stars tells the story of Hazel Grace a terminally ill girl who unexpectedly falls in love in her cancer support group. TFIOS is insightful, daring and heartbreaking. So, make sure to grab a box of tissues because this book is known to cause tears.

*Bonus the movie is released June 2014

2. Divergent

Declared the next Hunger Games but without the love triangle. Divergent is the first in its trilogy. Set in a futuristic dystopian society with five factions where each faction is dedicated to promote a specific virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). The day has come for sixteen year old Beatrice Prior to choose what faction she wants to devote herself too. Tris is the kind of female heroine we should all be looking up too. Likewise the author Veronica Roth wrote this book while still in college! How amazing is that?! Check it out you won’t be disappointed.

*Bonus the movie comes out March 2014

3. An Abundance of Katherine’s

This coming of age novel also written by John Green focuses on child prodigy Colin Singleton. Colin only dates girls named Katherine, who incidentally are always dumping him.  After being dumped by Katherine number 18, Colin decides to take a road trip with his best friend, Hassan. The two end up in Gutshot, TN where hilarity ensues.  The narrative is fun, witty, and delightful and you will have a blast reading it.

4.  If I Stay

Author Gayle Forman relates the story of Mia, a talented cellist whose life changes in the matter of seconds.  The last thing Mia remembers is taking a drive with her parents and little brother. Now all Mia sees are her parents’ lifeless bodies and her brother and herself being carted away by the paramedics. As her body remains in a coma, Mia reflects on the past and those around her and must decide whether to stay or go with her departed family. Mia’s story will stay with you for a long long time. *Warning this book may cause tears*

*Bonus movie in the making

5.  Forever

Is first love your true love? This is the question posed by veteran author Judy Blume. Katherine has just entered her senior year of high school  and has just met Michael. They soon are in a relationship and can’t get enough of each other. Although they haven’t been together all that long, they know it’s serious. Together they explore their firsts and a whole new world opens up. But they have their whole lives ahead of them can this relationship make it? “Forever” is the prefect book to curl  up to and will leave you questioning what this whole love thing is really about.
