Activities to Anticipate for Spring 2012!

1.     Spring Weather and Fashion Trends
If you haven’t noticed already, Riverside only has two seasons—spring and summer, so it’s time to finally unpack your short shorts and tank tops from the back of your closet. How can you update your wardrobe to fit the warm season? For the ladies, pastel shades, bright color-blocking, bold prints, oranges and pinks, and metallic futuristic looks will be big this spring. For the gentlemen, true blues and cool greys, plaid and striped knits, and suede shoes will have all the ladies looking. Something that will look good on both sexes? Anoraks! What’s an anorak? It’s a windbreaker made of nylon or cotton that is a half-zip and has a hood that’s meant to protect you from those occasional Santa Ana winds that blow their way onto campus.

2.     Movies: Superheroes and Fairytales!

Whether you go to the movies for a hot date, a girls’ night out, or just to escape the lull of schoolwork, here are some of the biggest films that will sure make a mark at the box office this spring. Hopefully you can score free tickets from school!

The Hunger Games (March 23): Based on the best-selling Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, this movie is projected to be another blockbuster hit. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence as heroine Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne. Katniss volunteers herself to participate in the annual Hunger Games and vows to win the games for her sister.

The Avengers (May 4): After watching Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, and Captain America, the film everyone has been waiting for is finally here. The only thing that’s even bigger than the plot is the hot actors in the movie. The laundry list of stars include: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jeremy Renner. How can this gang of superheroes stop Thor’s evil brother, Loki, and save the world? There’s only one way to know. Find out on May 4th.

Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1): Another twist on the classic Snow White tale, however from a side of the story we rarely hear about. 3.     Spring Sports!
Dust off your baseball caps and be ready to hit the ballpark because MLB baseball season is on its way. April 5th marks Opening Day for the major league, where we can expect every sports network to be showing a game. Not into professional sports? How about showing some Highlander love! Our baseball, softball, tennis, and track teams have already been playing, and after spring break they will be at mid-season. Come out to a game and show your support! For a complete schedule, visit www.gohighlanders.com.

 4.     ASUCR Elections
Whether you’re a CHASS, CNAS, or BCOE major, one thing of importance to all UCR students is having the right representation. Be sure to vote on new ASUCR Senate members within your college and any new fees that may be added for the next school year. Watch out for an email regarding election dates and times. At last year’s elections, free food and UCR gear was given out to those who voted, so don’t miss your chance!

5.     UCR Barn Series
Returning April 18th, the Barn at UCR will be releasing their Spring Quarter Barn Series line-up for the quarter. Earlier this year, musical acts like Pac Div, Zion I, and Matt Skiba graced the Barn stage. Tickets only run for $5 at the University Theatre Box Office.

6.     Spring Splash
Did you have a blast at this quarter’s Heat Festival? ASPB will also be presenting Spring Splash, a daytime concert that embraces Riverside’s sunny weather. Spring Splash will be held on April 28th from 2 – 7 pm at the Belltower. Look forward to awesome music, food trucks, live artists, and a Ferris wheel, all on campus! Past performers include Big Boi, Nas, Common, and Curren$y. Who will perform this year? Free tickets for undergraduate students will be distributed mid-April and tickets for non-UCR students can be purchased for $16 at the University Theatre Box Office.

7.     SUMMER!
Need I say more? It’s the final stretch of the academic year. Only eleven more weeks until we can finally feel summer freedom.
