Movies and TV Shows Recommended by a Film Studies Professor

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Throughout the quarter, my film studies professor has given us recommendations to movies and TV shows that he personally finds enjoyable. I got into the habit of writing them all down and now that break is coming up, I plan to watch a few of them. Here are a couple of recommendations that he’s given out that you can watch on Hulu or Netflix while you’re relaxing in bed with four blankets and two sweaters this winter break.

The Spectacular Now (2013) – Netflix

A romantic comedy from 2013 that you can enjoy whether you’re watching alone or catching up with friends. It’ll get some ooo’s and ahh’s has trouble teens, family issues, and passing out drunk on people’s lawns.

Atonement (2007) – Netflix

Based on Ian McEwan’s book, Atonement is both mystery and romance drama that got multiple awards for its music score and performances. It’ll make you reach for your tissue box and blame it for making your eyes hurt rather than the fact that you’ve been staring at your screen for 24 hours.

The Bodyguard (2018) – Netflix

The Bodyguard is a British drama series with 6 parts that you can probably watch in a single day of not moving at all in bed. It gets you hooked immediately, and you won’t want to look away.

The Kominksy Method (2018) – Netflix

The Kominsky Method was released this November and is a comedy series with respectable actors. My professor and other students in the lecture seemed to enjoy it, so it’s not just for old people if that’s what you’re thinking.

Atlanta (2016) – Hulu

A critically acclaimed TV series that was created by Donald Glover, who also stars in it? Yes please. It has 2 seasons as of now, and it’s one of the shows that leaves you wanting more.

Weiner (2016) – Hulu

Weiner is a political documentary about New York Congressman, Anthony Weiner, and his sex scandals. It also gives an inside look on political processes today. You might not be into documentaries, but it’s nice to watch something that’s eye opening every once in a while.

Arrival (2016)  Hulu

Arrival is one of those science fiction films that you watch at 2 AM when you realize you’re not sleepy anytime soon due to your broken sleeping schedule. Starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, you’re sure to have a good time watching it.

Superstore (2015) – Hulu

Superstore has a diverse cast and multiple funny moments. It gives an accurate representation of what it’s like to work in retail. It’s definitely one of my personal favorites, and I’d definitely give it a try if you’re fond of sitcoms.

Although not a lot of these are brand new, they’re still worth looking at this winter break. Remember to relax and enjoy time away from the stress of college life.
