Moises Garcia may only be a freshman, but he is definitely leaving a mark here at UC Riverside. Most recently, you may have heard his acoustic take on Tori Kelly’s Upside Down at The Barn for “R’Side Has Got Talent” where he placed second. Surprisingly, he has never decided to perform live until his performance at The Barn two weeks ago! He would often watch YouTube artists such as AJ Rafael, Tori Kelly, Jesse Barrera and Gabe Bondoc perform, and one day he decided to give singing a try. Moises said that their unique voices and different styles of music influenced the way he sings today. Be sure to keep your eyes and ears on the lookout for Moises His performing career will take off in the near future.

How long have you been singing?
I started singing my Freshmen Year of high school in the shower and behind closed doors haha.
Â
Where did you learn to play guitar? Because you are really good by the way!
Thanks! I started learning guitar during my junior year of high school. I would use my dad’s guitar and just learn different chords. Eventually I started to learn to play different songs and luckily, I got comfortable enough to the point where I could sing and play at the same time.Â
Â
Favorite Artist or Band?
It is really hard to target one artist as my favorite. Most of my favorite artists are ones that I followed on YouTube and was inspired by, such as AJ Rafael or Tori Kelly. They have completely different styles of music, but their voices are so unique and it has always been a pleasure of mine listening to them. If I were to choose favorite mainstream artist, I would probably go with BeyoncĂ© or Frank Ocean.Â
Â
Favorite song of the moment?
I would say “Give Me Love” by Ed Sheeran.Â
Â
Favorite Pastime?
I like to spend time with friends and family. I also like to run but, then again I love to eat too. Other than that, I like to play guitar and sing!
Â
Are you involved on campus at all?
Currently, I have joined a few clubs on campus that involve medical or health careers. During Fall Quarter, I had the pleasure of being on 909 Hip Hop Dance Troupe. It was a very fun experience that I will never forget.Â
Â
What do you feel is your best attribute?
I never really thought about that yet. If it’s regarding my voice, some people say my voice is really soothing. But other than that, I haven’t really thought about it.Â
Â
What has been your best experience at UCR thus far?
This is a hard question. I have definitely had several great experiences here at UCR with a bunch of new friends that I have made. But I would say my favorite “big” experience would have to be performing with 909 and also singing at the Talent Show. The adrenaline really hyped me up!
Â
What has been your biggest transition going into college?
My biggest transition into college was being more confident. A great example would be my singing. My friends here at UCR are the only people who know about it and it really took a lot for me to sing in front of people.Â
Â
What inspires you to keep you motivated?
My friends [always] encourage me with singing and it really lets me know that people are actually liking what they hear. It is something I have never encountered before so it’s really cool.Â
Â
What are your aspirations?
I hope to spread my name across UCR and just to have fun playing music and singing. My transition into college has given me a lot of confidence.Â
Â
Is there anything else that you would like us to know about you?
I get SUPER nervous whenever I perform. Some may not be able to tell, but on the inside, I am freaking out.
