Meghan and Harry Finally Step Back from the Royal Family

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

After ongoing tremendous amounts of bullying from the media in Britain, the Duchess and Duke of Sussex have decided to step back as senior members of the Royal Family. Back in October, it was revealed by Meghan in an interview that things were hard to handle emotionally. Who’s to blame her when the British media has scrutinized every single thing she’s done since marrying Prince Harry?

Meghan was always used as the media’s punching bag, and it was always brushed under the rug by the Royal Family. Some people even speculate that the harassment grew even worse when Prince William was caught cheating on Kate, saying that Meghan was thrown under the bus to get the negative press away from Prince William.

On their official Instagram, they released a statement:

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Meghan and Harry have not only done this for their own sake, but they have also done this for the sake of their son, Archie. They delivered this message in an elegant way, which will probably still anger the British media who bullied them out of being senior royal members in the first place. They were mad at Meghan for being a royal, and they’re going to get mad at her for not being a royal, too.

At the end of the day, Harry and Meghan are still going to continue running charities, helping out people, and being positive role models for the people and their son. They have started off the year by showing what it means to truly practice self care by separating themselves from an institution that would eventually destroy them if they kept themselves in it.
