Intel Presents: Girl Rising

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Last week on April 17th, HCUCR hosted a screening of “Girl Rising” at Sproul 2355 at 5:10pm. The room was booked and all the snacks dissappeared in an instant!

Here are a couple of quotes from people who saw the film:

“It made me appreciate the freedom and rights I have here in America both as a woman and just as a person. All any of the girls wanted was an education and to be equal. AND it made me feel like crap because there are days when I don’t appreciate being in college here at UCR.” -Amanda Flores (First Year)

“I thought it was really interesting to see the different struggles of young girls. I love to hear stories, especially true ones, and it was inspiring to see these girls able to openly share their struggles and experiences. My favorite was the last girl, who couldn’t even show her face due to her religion, and how powerfully she spoke about breaking out of her religious and cultural restraints. I thought her speech was beautiful. I, like Amanda, also felt bad haha. I think I take my education for granted. The film certainly helped give me perspective on how lucky we are to be at a university.” Brenna Dilger (First Year)

“It made me feel guilty for whining about a 9am class when those little girls wanted so badly to go to school. I skip class and they beg to be let in to school. It’s so strange to see how much I take school for granted and how much they value it. Such opposites. Made me want to appreciate my education more.” Lia Gonzalez (Third Year)
“The documentary forced me to confront the fact that I live in a bubble. I never realized how fortunate I was to be able to attend college or exercise my rights.” -Koy I. Saephanh (Third Year)
