How Remodeling my Bedroom Helped me Focus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Like many of us, I was forced to return home due to the pandemic. At first it was great being surrounded by family and being back in a familiar neighborhood. However, as soon as the summer ended and school began,, I found myself at a roadblock. I had nowhere to study and couldn’t focus. The only viable option was my bedroom but its darkness and the abundance of pillows and blankets made it a perfect place to binge Youtube rather than study.

During one of my many Youtube binges,,  I noticed a video on remodeling a bedroom. Intrigued,, I continued to watch makeover videos until I decided I was going to remodel my bedroom. I started to do research on making a productive workspace out of my bedroom and found many suggestions.  First, color scheme is important..aAccording to the first video, the brighter the room the more productive one feels. Also, my cousin taught me about the importance of having an assigned place to study as we often  often create associations between our environments and what we do. For example, my bed is where I relax. If I try to do homework on my bed I’m more likely to get distracted as my mind believes it is time to relax. According to another video on creating a productive workspace, it is important to have open space and all your required work material to be able to focus.

Armed with research I began to remodel my bedroom. First, I went to Lowe’s and bought a can of light peach light peach paint. For me,, this was a good option as the can of paint was about thirty dollars and was enough to do the entirety of my room. However, if you are unable to paint your room you can also put up wallpaper or even open up windows and add brighter accessories to your room. After I painted the walls of my room,, I threw away a few unnecessary pieces of furniture and rearranged the rest so that there was more open space. R Reorganizing and rearranging items in your bedroom can make a world of difference! The final step I took was setting up a study nook where I put all my necessary supplies and school materials, and with that I was finished!

Although changing up my bedroom was a laborious task,, I believe that it was worth the effort. I find that now that my bedroom feels more spacious and open it is easier to concentrate. I also don’t have to look for a study place anymore!  Even so, the best benefit I got from this task was the feeling of change and starting something new. For many, including myself, the pandemic has made us feel like we’re stuck in a never changing world, however,, this experience has reminded me that we still have the power to change our environments,, even in little ways.
