Film Spotlight: Halloween Horror Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Need a spooky flick or two to get you in the mood for the Halloween season? From mildly eerie to extremely spine-chilling, here are six films to top your list. Be prepared to sleep with the lights on for the next week.

1. Halloween (1978): A psychotic murderer institutionalized since childhood for the murder of his sister, escapes and stalks a bookish teenage girl and her friends while his doctor chases him through the streets. (This film is my must-watch during the holiday!)

2. The Silence of the Lambs (1991): A young F.B.I. cadet must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims.

3. Chernobyl Diaries (2012): Six tourists hire an extreme tour guide who takes them to the abandoned city Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. During their exploration, they soon discover they are not alone. (Bonus: this film stars Jesse McCartney.)

4. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2001): A lawyer takes on a negligent homicide case involving a priest who performed an exorcism on a young girl. The fact that this film is loosely based on the true story of Anneliese Michel makes it even scarier!

5. Insidious (2010): A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further. This film actually terrified me beyond belief. Highly recommend.

6. Zombieland (2009): A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, and a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the Last Twinkie and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America. After watching those other films, this will hopefully get you laughing again!
