5 Things To Do During Your Spring Break: Without Killing Your Wallet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Greetings my fellow Universiettes! (I know that’s not a word, c’mon work with me people!)

As all of you may be aware of by now, finals week is over! Woot-woot!

And if you didn’t know or haven’t noticed well…ummm…we might have a problem.

With the passing of this much dreaded, but inevitable natural occurrence within our university lives, comes the blossoming season of spring. Which for you equals your freedom or it’s more common name: SPRING BREAK!

You probably know a couple people who have told you all about their awesome plans for their spring break; a cruise to the Caribbean, getaway to Cancun, music festivals, endless parties, you name it! And the whole time you’re listening to them you’re just like…

…because you, a broke college student without a car, are probably going to sit at home like a bum and do…absolutely-freaking-nothing.

The good news is I am here to save you from your couch potato ways. There are still plenty of things that you can do during your break without spending too much of that valuable green paypurrrrr.

NUMBER ONE – SPRING CLEANING

Your house and/or apartment are not the only things that can get a fresh new look. Why not give yourself a fresh start? The time is coming where you put away those layers upon layers of cute knit sweaters and from the depths of your closet, bring out those cute cutoff shorts, rompers, floral dresses, and tank tops. Without the bulgy clumps of clothing covering most of your body, the opportunity to show off your figure is here, and you know you want to look hot (Ahem, for those cuties at the beach, you already know doe).

Now that you have the time to be physically active, try some fun activities that will have you looking and feeling your best.

Swimming is one of the ways that you can get more active. If it’s a thousand degrees outside why not try a little dip into the pool? Do a couple of laps and have fun in the sun with friends or family. Don’t have a pool? Try your local community pool and don’t forget your sunblock!

Another thing you can try is hiking. Yeah I know a lot of us dread such vigorous labor, but just trust me this once! It’s like walking but with more of a view! You can hike just about anywhere; mountain trails, the woods, parks, by the beach, the possibilities are endless! I personally suggest the Hollyridge trail which leads you to the Hollywood sign. Who doesn’t love Hollywood?! But fair warning, this is for tough cookies only, but the satisfaction (and view) is worth it. Don’t forget your water!

NUMBER TWO – A DAY AT THE BEACH

A spring break isn’t complete without a trip to the beach at least once. Gather a couple of your friends and arrange a day. Once carpools, food (try a potluck-esque arrangement), and what beach is decided, everything from there on is easy as pie! Just have fun!

Splash into the refreshing sea water or just lie in the sun and get a nice tan while reading a good book. Have a volleyball tournament or any other sport! Finally, end the day with a nice bonfire; S’MORES are a must!

#Noteworthy: Can’t do the beach? Don’t trip potato chip. Try having a BBQ at a friend’s house with a pool instead! With your best buds it is bound to be just as fun and you get the luxury of privacy.

NUMBER THREE – CAMPING

“Let’s gather around the campfire and sing our campfire song, our C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E-S-O-N-G song!”

Okay, okay I’ll stop singing now.

Although it is not the most luxurious thing in the world, camping in the great outdoors is a very calming and fun experience! For small rates and fees you can camp at National Parks. Camping equipment can be pricey if you don’t already have it though, so look into alternative ways of camping.

Go onto this website and find out more information about camping and how to reserve a spot!

NUMBER FOUR – CONCERTS AND SHOWS

Can you say free? Television productions and shows are always looking for live audiences. Go with friends or family and get to see your favorite shows live!

NUMBER FIVE – RELAX, COME TO IT, WHEN YOU WANT TO COME TO IT

I know I said not to be a couch potato but let’s face it; it’s not called Spring Break if you don’t have a chill day. Sleep in? Hell. To. The. Yeah. Now is the time to catch up on those Zzz’s and replenish your mind with…whatever your brain transmits to your body when you sleep (.__.)

In all seriousness though, it’s fine to just take a day to relax both your mind and body.

You can make this day your movie day or your I-am-so-behind-in-this-show-oh-well-look-at-that-Netflix-Netflix-Netflix-all-day day. So grab that popcorn, some Raisinets©, and whatever else you can find in your pantry cause it’s about to get serious.
