Katherine Berry: Embodying The Spirit of Troy Online

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

Katherine Berry

If you’re anything like me then you spend countless hours on YouTube (procrastinating for that one class). While I enjoy a Buzzfeed video every so often, I spend most of my time watching college YouTubers. Those unfamiliar with the term, it is as simple as it sounds. It is just college students displaying their life on YouTube. While it may seem weird to watch random college kids on the internet, I find comfort knowing that we are all just trying to graduate. One channel in particular stood out to me.

Katherine Berry’s crisp and pristine filming/editing on top of her friendly demeanor on camera captured my attention. Her videos vary to include fashion, DIY’s, hauls, and most importantly college/life advice. Berry, a senior studying Business Administration at USC’s Marshall School of Business, manages to balance her hectic life, and still gets some sleep. On top of being a college student juggling homework, clubs, internships, marching band and being a campus tour guide, she makes videos for her YouTube channel, “Katherout” as well as her vlog channel “Katherouttings.”

I was fortunate enough to ask her all about her busy life.

Q: How do you manage to balance YouTube and school?

A: I’ve always been the kind of person that has had high expectations for what I want to accomplish since I was in elementary school and I was always hyper-involved in high school. I think being at USC has added to my ability of time balancing because of the environment that the university has created. On top of that I have a tight Google Calendar that keeps track of everything I have going on in case I forget and it’s definitely manageable.

Q: Do you ever feel stressed out having to choose between YouTube and school?

I always remind myself that my education comes first and that YouTube comes last. I’m a college student who does Youtube not a Youtuber who does college. This past semester I wasn’t uploading as much to both channels because I was focusing on school and preparing for job interviews. YouTube isn’t my full time career, it’s a hobby and I’m really grateful that my supporters are so understanding when I don’t upload on a regular basis.

Thanks to her my life is organized (no seriously I bought a planner because of her)

Q: Where do you cross the line with your viewers in regards to your privacy as a college student?

I remember when I started my channel I was very discrete about where I lived and where I was going to school, but now it’s become pretty obvious that I attend USC. That being said I will be keeping where I work private as I don’t want to jeopardize my career for the sake of creating content. I love my viewers but I have the ability to decide what I want to share and what I don’t and my viewers respect that.

Q: What is the plan for your channels post-grad?

I think it’s pretty daunting that I won’t be in college making videos especially considering that I’ve grown so much because of my college content, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t stop creating college videos. Just because I’m graduating doesn’t mean I can’t upload college content after all I still went to college. My vlogs will be focused more on my day to life as I prepare for my new job and transition out of college. I will be dedicating more time and effort to my blog and possibly start an online podcast that will revolve around women in tech.

Q: Any advice for those thinking of starting their own channels?

Make content that you want to watch or that isn’t readily available. If it something that you’re interested in go for it. Your focus should not be about getting subscribers; it should be about making things that you’re proud of later down the line.

There’s no doubt that this soon to be USC grad is doing and will continue to do big things long after her college days. Katherine will “Fight On” in the world of the unknown that is post-grad and I like many will keep on watching. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out her videos and subscribe! Big thanks to Katherine Berry for taking time out of her day to speak to me!

Here’s her latest video so you can get yourself a job/internship.

When I'm not writing articles, I enjoy working out, meditating, listening to podcasts, traveling and surrounding myself with people who bring me joy.
