How to Stay Motivated When Going Vegan

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

First off, what is veganism? Veganism is a diet that consists of no animal products, that includes dairy, eggs, meat and even honey. It took lots of trial and error for me to go fully vegan, and with the following tips I hope to help anyone trying to go vegan achieve that goal.

Take your time.

Expect the transition to take a few weeks or even months. Personally, I had never tried giving up meat or any other diet trends before going vegan, so it was a huge leap for me. I was trying to go from eating dairy, eggs, and meat every day of my life to eating none of it in one day. Everyone is different, but I would say not to constrict yourself to a time frame because it could make the process even more challenging.

Forgive yourself.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. If you slip up in the beginning, remind yourself that it’s okay because it’s part of the process of transitioning. For me, I used to feel so much guilt whenever I slipped up, and it gave me a negative mindset about the entire thing. However, by learning to forgive myself, I was able to eventually eat vegan every day and enjoy it.

Don’t despair.

Adding on to the topic of forgiveness, I will say not to allow your temptations to detour you. Regardless of cravings for meat or dairy products, it’s important to have faith in yourself. Especially if going vegan is something you strongly wish to achieve, keeping hope will take you a long way. I was vegetarian for eight months before eating an entirely vegan diet, and although it was difficult in the beginning, after enough time passed it became second nature.

Get creative.

Follow vegan foodie instagrams for inspiration! Whether it’s gaining inspiration from recipes or seeing recommendations for food spots, save anything that looks good to you. Seeing what other vegans are eating can be the most helpful because it can open you up to an entire world of veganism. There is a plethora of vegan food products and food spots that I had no clue existed before exploring the online community of vegans.

With all of this in mind, hopefully something I mentioned inspired you to try veganism or further peaked your interest in it!
