Deck the Halls: 5 Simple Ways to Make Your Space More Festive

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

Yay, it’s finally December! Which means it is now socially acceptable for me to deck the halls with holiday cheer. My favorite part of the holiday season has always been the decorations. I love driving past South Coast Plaza and seeing all the trees lit up and the giant Christmas ornaments, or going to the tree lighting ceremony at Fashion Island. There is just something about Christmas decorations that make this time of year so special. Why not bring those festive vibes into your own place? Here are some of the easiest ways to add that dash of Christmas cheer to your space:

1. Lights, Lights and even more Lights

The easiest and most effective decoration to turn your room into a winter wonderland are string lights, and like most things, the more the merrier. Go crazy and feel free to hang them from your ceiling for a more starry night feel or simply up on your walls. There is such a variety of string light designs to choose from and can practically be found at any department store or online.

2. Paper Snowflakes

For the decorator on a budget, try out this holiday décor staple. All you need is some white printer paper (or you can opt for different colors or textures if you want to spice up this classic) and scissors. Simply start cutting away or go onto websites like Pinterest to get some inspiration or for pattern templates.

3. Gift Wrap Wallpaper

Literally deck the halls by covering your doors, table tops, or other flat surfaces with wrapping paper. For a more minimalist vibe, opt for solid color wrapping paper. However, if you really want to go all out, reach for red and green colored paper with festive print. Depending on how many surfaces you want to cover, you will probably need more than one roll. You can buy some cheap rolls from a local dollar store.

4. Wreaths

It’s pretty self-explanatory, but put wreaths on your doors: front door, bedroom door, bathroom door…you get the point. Just hang them on all your doors, it’s festive I promise.

5. Holiday Pillows

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m obsessed with pillows. I know they literally serve no purpose except for making it fun for me to jump on my bed, but I love them all the same. An easy way to make your space more festive is to simply switch out your normal throw pillows for holiday ones. Put them on your bed, couch and even against the backs of your chairs. You can never have too many pillows.
