Versailles, France. The city is a landmark of political power struggles and was a royal home for kings. There is a multitude of chapters in your history textbook devoted to its ancient significance. Not only does this majestic city hold a status of nobility in global history but is also currently renowned for its massive role in French cultural influence. Stepping out on the French artistic scene is Phoenix, a garage-based band, and is widely gaining musical recognition on a phenomenally fast roll of momentum. The coming together of vocalist Thomas Mars with bassist Deck d’Arcy and guitarists Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz is a seemingly perfect composition of raw musical talent that has turned up the heat in the music industry on a fiery global scale. Having performed at numerous music festivals all over the world, including last year’s Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California, the alternative pop rock band strikes a well-infused balance between groovy disco, electronic influence and indie alternative rock.

Phoenix! Soon enough, you’ll find yourself calling them out too. There are numerous situations to put Phoenix on blast and none of these situations are embarrassingly confrontational. For all four-wheel-vehicle-driving collegiettes, Phoenix provides an approachable style of fun music that will bring out the head bopper in you and your friends. Just a heads up, it may potentially even get your group to start fist pumping with the accomplice of your sound system while your car transforms into your own personal rock concert.

Phoenix has heavy instrumentation with an emphasis on synthesizer-produced sounds, guitar strings and drumming. Just as there are fluctuating bumps and pit stops on your road trip, there are variations in what kind of atmosphere the collegiette wants to set in her car. Sometimes the head bopper in you just needs a break from all the fist pumping. This then, would be an appropriate time to… not switch artists and keep Phoenix on.

That’s right! Keep Phoenix on. Amazingly, this French band is admirably versatile in producing alternative indie pop rock songs that are sunny-energetic as well as mixing it up with mellow, more vocal-focused tracks. However, what is most intriguing about Phoenix is their uncanny ability to make you actually really want to listen to them.  On the surface, Phoenix roars to life with synthesizer-driven acts. Under the surface, these acts jam with underlying vibes decipherable through their lyrics. Upon first glance, this is exactly what Phoenix lyrics appear to be. The verses disguisable as hieroglyphics or scrambled English, a task seemingly only solvable for an expert in linguistics. These in-depth, intricately-woven choruses are the reason for the existence of websites like “SongMeanings” and “Yahoo!Answers”. Each Phoenix song presents itself with a story, whether it’s from revelations from past experiences or from a heart-breaking lesson learned on the way. Either way, Phoenix has a way with the audience that draws them in through captivating tenor in both sound and written words. So collegiettes, next time you’re in the car, hit the brakes and turn Phoenix up! Warning: “It’ll be like a riot, like a riot, oh!”- Lisztomania
