5 Reasons Why You Should Prioritize Strong Female Friendships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

With a busy week of finals ahead, trying to manage school, work, and relationships can become pretty overwhelming. It can begin to feel like you are navigating life all on your own, but this article is here to remind you that you’re not alone. Healthy friendships are essential to get you through rough times like this. Just look at the Pink Ladies, Power Puff Girls, or Taylor Swift’s #squadgoals for evidence of how awesome it is to have a strong friend group. Although many people might view girl groups as being too “cliquey,” there is nothing wrong with having a close-knit group of friends who are consistently supporting and motivating you. Here are a few reasons why you should prioritize strong female friendships.

  1. Empowered women empower women. Surrounding yourself with driven and motivated people will only encourage you to become a better version of yourself.
  2. Your girls can offer you advice and guidance when you really need it. The truth is, no matter what rough patch you are going through right now, one of your friends has probably gone through a similar situation; and survived. It is comforting to be able to talk to someone who will really listen and understand you when you are feeling down.
  3. You won’t need to seek validation from others when you are surrounded by friends who uplift you and remind you what a beautiful person you are (inside and out).
  4. The memories you create with your friends are the most unforgettable ones. Having a girls’ night out or simply staying in to watch clueless for 100th time; these are moments that you will cherish for the rest of your life.
  5. Group hugs are a thing. And they are wonderful.

Hi! My name is Nat and I am a third year student at UC Irvine. I'm proud to call sunny Los Angeles my hometown.  I love being a tourist in my own city; going to museums, trying new places to eat, and exploring locations for cute photo-ops!
