The term “skin care” was unfamiliar to me until a couple of years ago when I came across someone’s skin care routine while scrolling through TikTok. Skin care involves routines and practices that help maintain and improve your skin, with many people primarily focusing on their facial area. The world of skin care and its copious amounts of products initially overwhelmed me, as I had previously been using a bar of soap and nothing else for my skin.

As I fell down the rabbit hole of skin care YouTube and TikTok videos, I realized that keeping care of my skin wasn’t just limited to washing my face each day. A good skin care routine often involves several products such as facial cleansers, serums, moisturizers, and sunscreen. Combining these products can reduce blemishes and redness on the face and, not to mention, it will leave your skin glowing and feeling hydrated.

After doing my fair share of online research, it was time to figure out which products I wanted to purchase. Everyone has different skin types and it was important to find products that suited my skin type. When I first started building a routine, I mainly focused on choosing a good facial cleanser and moisturizer. I learned that it could be harmful to introduce lots of products at once in a skin care routine because it can be a shock to your skin, resulting in breakouts and irritation. Once my skin adapted to my new drugstore moisturizer and cleanser, I started adding serums and sunscreen to my routine.

One con of building a skin care routine is cost. Skin care is undoubtedly expensive, especially for those who need products to target specific issues. Although I still use some drugstore products, I realized that investing in good skin care has improved the appearance of my skin and it overall feels healthier. Investing in good products can lead to long-term benefits, such as reducing the appearance of aging and improving acne. However, with some quick Google searches, it is easy to find affordable drugstore products that can produce the same results as their expensive counterparts.

Even years after starting a skin care routine, I still find myself discovering and experimenting with new products. Skin care is a journey that involves lots of experimentation, but finding that holy grail product makes all the difference. Finding skin care products that worked for me has not only improved my skin’s health but has improved my confidence.
