What Are We Striving For?

I woke up today and midway through planning the entirety of my goals–financially, fitness-related, weekly, semesterly, personal interest, relationally–I realized that the generation and the culture we reside in is often selfish.

We focus on the goals we think are incredible for ourselves, whether they come down to toning up and losing weight to eating healthy to achieving a certain letter grade to moving up in the company. Loving yourself is one of the most gracious blessings in the world. Loving yourself, however, will not change the world. Loving yourself should be the primary stepping stone to something all that more rewarding, which is forming an impact on someone beyond your own self. I love myself so that I can focus outwardly onto the world instead of looking inward at what I lack. If our attention is solely internal, how an we impact the external world? If all we see in our day to day lives is “me, myself, and I”, how can we continue to declare that we are striving to make a change?

As emphasized, self-love is valuable but what you do with that self love is the vision you should be looking towards. Are you solely satisfied with your “success”? If becoming who you want to be is as silly as achieving a certain body or a certain social status, perhaps it is time to rethink your value system and the purpose of your life. There is so much more than this, you are so much more than this.

As a senior undergraduate, I seek out all opportunities that expand my horizons, with the aim of developing professionally and deepening my vision of how I can positively impact the world around me. While most of my career aims revolve around healthcare and medicine, I enjoy producing content that is informative, engaging, and motivating.  In the past few years, I have immersed myself in the health field through working at a private surgical clinic, refining my skills as a research assistant in both wet-lab and clinical settings, shadowing surgeons in a hospital abroad, serving different communities with health-oriented nonprofits, and currently, exploring the pharmaceutical industry through an internship in clinical operations.  Career goals aside, I place my whole mind and soul in everything that I pursue whether that be interacting with patients in hospice, consistently improving in fitness PR’s, tutoring children in piano, or engaging my creativity through the arts. Given all the individuals that I have yet to learn from and all the opportunities that I have yet to encounter in this journey, I recognize that I have much room and capacity for growth. Her Campus is a platform that challenges me to consistently engage with my community and to simultaneously cultivate self-expression.Â
