Spring Break Ideas, Closer to Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Ever since I became old enough to care, I’ve been jealous of my friends who were lucky enough to go somewhere exciting for spring break.  My vacation envy has grown exponentially since I entered college, as it seems like everyone around me is snapping up tickets for party meccas like Cabo and Vegas, as well as cultural destinations such as South America and Europe.  For those of you who can relate, I’ve compiled a list of things you can do to make the best of your spring break, ranging from relaxing to intensive.

Relaxing:

Make full use of that Netflix subscription (or pester a friend for his account): As an eternal homebody, this is my personal favorite.  Lying on your bed and catching up on old episodes of Parks and Rec while demolishing a bag of chips with guacamole is seriously underrated.  Bonus points if you’re not wearing pants- is there anything better than the feeling of cool sheets on bare legs?

Mid-Level:

Find a new hobby! My personal goal this break is to learn how to cook an entire meal on my own, and not the kind of meal that can be microwaved in two minutes.  This short break is the perfect time to try out all those pins stacking up on your Pinterest boards, whether it’s rainbow polka dot cakes, dollar-store crafts, the rather dubious-sounding “Elmer’s Glue Facial Peel”.

Intensive:

One activity that has been growing in awareness and popularity in the past few years is the alternative break.  Vacationers can spend their summer, winter, or spring breaks volunteering in needy areas, or even just immersing themselves in a current issue they are interested in.  I wish I’d known about this earlier, because Cal’s Public Service Center website still has the programs that were offered for this spring break, and many are located close to our homes- in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and the Central Valley.  This year, people will be immersing themselves in the issue of poverty and homelessness in San Francisco, immigration between Tijuana and San Diego, and human dignity in the Central Valley.
