A Song Parody to Get You Through Midterms Season and the President’s Latest Gaffes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Last Wednesday, a letter from President Trump to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan began circulating the internet. In the message, Trump suggests that Erdogan show military restraint when invading northern Syria and threatens to devastate the Turkish economy if Erdogan does not comply––or “good things don’t happen.”

With such conversational, simply-phrased, and condescending lines like “Don’t be a tough guy” and “I will call you later,” many have wondered whether or not Trump’s letter is real… but of course it is! Or, are you not familiar with U.S. President Donald Trump? Master of typos, ignorance, and egotism?

According to news writer Helen Murphy from PEOPLE Magazine, one person even tweeted: “Trump’s letter to Erdogan bears uncanny resemblance to this letter my daughter wrote to my son (when she was six).” The six-year-old’s letter, shown below, truly does resemble the same simplistic and grammatical style as our dear Mr. President.

In light of Trump’s recent incivility, rather than expressing my own anger about the distressing state of our country with a post on social media, I’ve chosen to write a song parody using Fireflies by Owl City. An instrumental version of the song is linked here so you may sing along and hopefully enjoy a laugh. After all, laughter is the best medicine (during everyday life, a stressful week of midterms, or a fearsome four-year presidential term)!

Parody Song: Trump Lies by Sydney Segal

You should not believe his lies

Even if he tweets otherwise

Starting wars with Turkey in his sleep

‘Cause he simply does not care

Leaving typos everywhere

You’d think me rude but I also hate his hair

He’d like to make us all believe that America is great

It’s hard to say but I’d rather be in Canada, oh please

‘Cause everything is never as he claims

‘Cause he is a hypocrite

Golfs more than a little bit

As if he has no important plans

A MAGA hat on his head

“I’ll build a wall,” he has said

Our country is just hanging by a thread

He’d like to make us all believe that America is great

It’s hard to say but I’d rather be in Canada, oh please

‘Cause everything is never as he claims

Would date daughter if not “Dad”

(Please take me away from here)

Wife after wife after wife he has had

(Please take me away from here)

Loyal followers act like sheep

(Please take me away from here)

I’m far too tired of hearing his bleeps

It’s not that I hope he dies

Just true that I hate his lies

The Obama family should come back

But at least Kanye’s not too far

So things can get more bizarre

Because why have politics in one’s repertoire?

He’d like to make us all believe that America is great

It’s hard to say but I’d rather be in Canada, oh please

‘Cause everything is never as he claims

He’d like to make us all believe that America is great

It’s hard to say but I’d rather be in Canada, oh please

‘Cause everything is never as he claims

He’d like to make us all believe that America is great

It’s hard to say but I’d rather be in Canada, oh please

At least there has been movement to impeach

Original Song: Fireflies by Owl City

You would not believe your eyes

If ten million fireflies

Lit up the world as I fell asleep

‘Cause they’d fill the open air

And leave teardrops everywhere

You’d think me rude but I would just stand and stare

I’d like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns slowly

It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep

‘Cause everything is never as it seems

‘Cause I’d get a thousand hugs

From ten thousand lightning bugs

As they tried to teach me how to dance

A foxtrot above my head

A sock hop beneath my bed

The disco ball is just hanging by a thread

I’d like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns slowly

It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep

‘Cause everything is never as it seems

Leave my door open just a crack

(Please take me away from here)

‘Cause I feel like such an insomniac

(Please take me away from here)

Why do I tire of counting sheep?

(Please take me away from here)

When I’m far too tired to fall asleep

To ten million fireflies

I’m weird ’cause I hate goodbyes

I got misty eyes as they said farewell

But I’ll know where several are

If my dreams get real bizarre

‘Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar

I’d like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns slowly

It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep

‘Cause everything is never as it seems

I’d like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns slowly

It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep

‘Cause everything is never as it seems

I’d like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns slowly

It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep

Because my dreams are bursting at the seams
