OVERRATED LETTERBOXD MOVIES

Letterboxd is becoming my favorite website to learn about new films and movies. As someone who loves scrolling through Letterboxd reviews, I often find myself disagreeing with some of the movies deemed well-known and popular. Movies deemed highly rated on Letterboxd such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Black Swan are undoubtedly well made. However, some movies are simply overrated, in my opinion. These are four popular movies on Letterboxd that I find overrated.

1. FIGHT CLUB

I remember watching this movie on a Friday night, eager to see what the hype was about. I’ve heard so many great reviews about the movie and wanted to know why the movie was so popular. People would constantly quote the movie, and it was integral to pop culture for some time. To my surprise, I simply thought about it as a boy movie about men finding joy in fighting each other. Even the plot twist with Tyler having a split personality and fighting with himself left me oddly unamused.

2. PAST LIVES

Despite hearing everyone’s reviews and how the movie left them heartbroken and crying, I ended up falling asleep the first time I tried watching the movie. I never understood the appeal of the movie considering the main conflict was someone from Nora’s past reappearing. Since Nora had already established her own life with her husband, her long lost love felt like reopening a closed story from the past.

3. Dead Poets Society

Dead Poets Society is another Friday Night movie and one countless people have said has made them cry. It’s a classic movie everyone has heard of about preparatory school. To me, the movie felt like a story of an ordinary high school with an abrupt death of a student. I found the rest of the plot line to be slightly boring, leaving not as large of an impact on me.

4. Interstellar

This movie has beautiful filming, editing, and overall story structure. Despite all of the positives of this movie, I would never watch it more than once. The length of the movie was far too long for the events that happened. I thought that the movie had dragged on, and the movie length could have been condensed.

I love using Letterboxd and reading people’s reviews on different movies. Even though I find these movies are not as interesting to me, I still love reading reviews about what other people think of the movie.
