How to Do Your Makeup Like a Celebrity

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Ever wondered how to pull off some of the classic looks of a singer or red carpet star? Try these basic make-up styles inspired by a few of our favorite celebrities.

Lady Gaga: The Red Lip

1.     Moisten your lips with water and buff away dead skin by using a toothbrush. The bristles should be just tough enough to soften those chapped lips.

2.     Apply a thin layer of clear lip balm to moisturize and give a smooth base for the lipstick you’re going to apply.

3.     Use lip-liner (either clear or the same color as your lipstick) and trace the outer edges of your lips. This prevents your lip color from bleeding and helps maintain a perfect shape for hours.

4.     Apply your first layer of lipstick, then blot your lips with a tissue. Apply a second layer of lipstick and blot again.

5.     Optional—Gloss your lips for even more dramatic, eye-catching look!

Tips: Choose a lip color that complements your skin tone. Light skin can pull off a bright coral shade, while olive skin and darker goes best with deeper reds.

Camilla Belle: Defined Eyebrows

1.     Brush your eyebrows with a brow brush to get the hairs tidy and ready for grooming.

2.     Look in the mirror to see where your eyebrows have any unwanted hair. Pluck the excess hair with tweezers, making sure to only eliminate the strands that fall outside the natural shape of your eyebrows. Go slowly to avoid overplucking.

3.     Take an eyebrow pencil a slight shade darker than your brows (even eyeliner will do) and draw short, quick strokes along your eyebrow to perfectly define your arches.

Tweezerman Animal Print Tweezers, $25; Nars Eyebrow Pencil in Panama, $22.

Kreayshawn: Winged Eyeliner

1.     Take an eyeliner pen and use a line of short, careful strokes to create an outline of where you want your later eyeliner to be. When you reach the corner of your eye, angle your eye pencil upward to draw the wings.
(For Kreayshawn’s more dramatic look, draw the line really high at an angle a little larger than 40 degrees.)
This helps you better control the symmetry of your makeup and prevent the uneven mess that can come from using liquid liner right away.

2.     Uncap your liquid liner and gently brush the applicator against the inside of the bottle to get rid of any excess. Following the guide you drew with the pencil, apply the liquid liner to the top of your lid until you reach the end of the line. Make sure to narrow the width of your liner as you trace along the outer wings.

3.     Optional—Apply eyeliner to your bottom lid and brush on a coat or two of mascara to further define your eyes.

Tips: If you want, try using gel liner, which uses a thin brush that typically gives you more control than liquid liner.

Beyoncé: Glowing Skin

1.     Wash your face with a gentle cleanser (or a more powerful facial scrub if you feel like it). Then apply moisturizer along your face and neck to get soft, makeup-ready skin.

2.     Use small applications of concealer to hide any unwanted zits or dark spots.

3.     Apply either liquid or powder foundation in a shade that matches your skin tone. If you’re using liquid foundation you can use your fingers to apply, while a wide makeup brush is usually best for powder.  Make sure to blend thoroughly to get flawless, even coverage.

4.     Get out your bronzer—again, this can be either powder or liquid depending on what you buy, and can range from light shades with a hint of shimmer to a deeper glowing tan. Because bronzer is so versatile, you can choose to apply it lightly all over your face for a subtle glow, or even just to your cheeks for a pop of sun-kissed color.

5.     Optional—Contouring: Apply the bronzer to the sides of your temple and along the outside edges of your face, moving inward with bigger strokes to cover the area beneath your cheekbones. For further definition, lightly apply bronzer along your jawline and to the outer edges of your nose.
