The Grammys 2013: Best and Worst Moments

The 55th annual Grammy Awards aired last Sunday Feb. 10 on CBS. All of music’s biggest stars stepped out for this glamour event, showing off their singing skills, A-list romances and assets for viewers around the world. And despite CBS issuing a mandatory dress code, Hollywood’s hottest gals flaunted their famous figures in see-through dresses and showed off their gorgeous gams in thigh-high slits.

For the most part it took a while for the show to get going, but the last hour or so was very electric, from Jack White kicking out the hard jams to LL Cool J and his buddies performing. The two biggest awards (Record of the Year, Album of the Year) went to Gotye/Kimbra for “Somebody That I Used to Know” and Mumford and Sons for Babel, respectively. Both were well deserved.  To simplify the night here are the best and worst moments of 2013 Grammys:

The Best:

  • Levon Helm Tribute

Of course they did “The Weight,” which isn’t the most original choice, but it’s also the most recognizable. Anyway, the assembled musicians were all-stars, but just different enough to make some memories. The crowning moment, was Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes taking Levon Helm’s verse in the song and absolutely crushing it. What a performance.

  • The Black Keys and Dr. John & the Preservation Jazz Hall Band

This is the kind of stuff I love: Take two groups that you might never think to join and throw them together. They were just different enough that it made “Lonely Boy” – a song we’ve heard over and over – sound completely fresh and different.

  • Prince and Gotye

As a presenter, Prince was pretty excellent. As a winner, Gotye delivered an excellent speech. It was a neat moment.

  • Justin Timberlake

Come on its JT!! He performed his new single “Pusher Love Girl,” with the inclusion of Jay-Z. He’s gorgeous and incredibly talented.

The Worst:

  • Taylor Swift and the White Rabbit

What in the heck was all that?!  Was this performance an Alice and Wonderland homage or an effort to dis Harry Styles on live television.

  • Chris Brown

No, he didn’t perform. But he was on camera a lot looking pretty angry at not winning anything. Then there was the shot of Brown as the only person not standing when Frank Ocean won for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Hater?

  • LL Cool J, Played Off At His Own Awards Show

After three hours of talking about hashtags, LL Cool J was finally allowed to do some actual rapping — and then the Grammys promptly cut to their corporate sponsors. Let LL live, Grammys!

Overall, it was good to see the Grammys rewarding some newer, younger talent than they have in a long time. The awards, seen as pretty stodgy and generally rewarding past accomplishments over current work, seem to be moving in the right direction.
