This winter, I’ve been keeping warm through music. Sometimes, all it takes is a good song to keep me from shivering on my way to class. These tracks are some of my favorites to listen to during winter. Hopefully, there will be some that you can add to your playlists as well!

1. “PPP” – Beach House

This dreamy track pulls you in with its lush instrumentation and ethereal vocals by Victoria Legrand. With the poignant lyrics of “Like tracing figure eights on ice in skates,” this song fits the frosty vibe of the season perfectly. As silly as it sounds, I always picture myself figure skating whenever I listen to this song.

2. “Velvet Ring” – Big Thief

This song reminds me of curling up by the fireplace. Adrianne Lenker is an absolute gift, and her delicate voice, paired with gentle guitar strumming, is a perfect match. Plus, the songwriting is excellent. My favorite line is in the chorus, where Lenker sings, “Love is a gentle thing.” It’s a reminder we all need to hear sometimes.

3. “Flowers in December” – Mazzy Star

It might be well past December, but this song remains in my winter rotation. Hope Sandoval has such a beautiful voice. I particularly love the harmonica used in this. Its sweet sound with Sandoval’s voice makes it the perfect all-season-long listen.

4. “Waiting for You (Bonus Track)” – Alex G

Although no words are sung in this instrumental, I listen to it all the time. The sweet piano melodies and soothing horns create such a dreamy vibe. This song can suit any activity, whether drinking hot cocoa, cuddling up in a blanket, or reading a lovely book. All in all, it’s a peaceful listening experience.

5. “Back to the Old House” – The Smiths

This song is a melancholy dream. With its poignant and introspective lyrics that long to return to the “old house,”  this song reflects on nostalgia and the past, perfect for winter. All of us are longing for spring and summer to come. This song always leaves me wistfully staring out the window, dreaming of the warmer days soon.

May these songs warm your heart as much as they do mine! Music is powerful; we all need a song to soothe our souls during this cold season. These songs can be the light you need to get you through to spring!
