While Northside, Southside, and Downtown Berkeley might be bustling all day, one of my favorite spots has to be Elmwood.Â
Just a 20 to 30 minute walk from University of California, Berkeley, Elmwood offers a wide variety of shops and restaurants to explore (many of which go all out to celebrate autumn)!
If you and your friends ever decide to head over to Elmwood, here is a list of the best shops and food stops to explore!
1. Baker and Commons
Baker & Commons was one of the first places I tried when I arrived in Berkeley, and whether you get coffee, pastries, or breakfast, you’ll be satisfied. Some of my top menu items include the breakfast sandwich, matcha blondie, and a warm cinnamon roll. Baker & Commons also has nice tables near the window if you’re ever looking for a calm spot to study!Â
2. La Mediterranee
While Gateway might be delicious, La Mediterranee is a great place to dine if you ever want a little extra and are still craving Mediterranean food. From the chicken shawarma plate to the hummus and pita, La Mediterranee is a great place to visit with your friends after spending the day exploring the shops of Elmwood.
3. Five Little Monkeys
Five Little Monkeys is truly a blast from the past. If your KneeDoh just broke or you want to build a LEGO, Five Little Monkeys has what you’re looking for! Located right across Baker & Commons, it could be a fun place to stop by after your yummy breakfast!Â
4. Mrs Dalloway’s
If you’re wanting to read a book (and I mean any book), Mrs Dalloway’s most definitely has it. This local bookstore in Elmwood has no shortage of great reads and recommendations. After spending all day on your computers working hard, it might be nice to relax with a good book and discover your next read here!Â
5. Miharu
As a Yogurt Park lover, I was hesitant to try out a new ice cream place, but Miharu didn’t disappoint! The Breakfast Brownie flavor with cornflakes and brownies was delicious and I would highly recommend it if you want to try a new flavor.Â
6. Elmwood Stationers
Your typical notebook and pencils can get boring really fast, so if you ever want to switch up your school supplies, head to Elmwood Stationers! They have adorable stickers, pens and pencils, and postcards. Or, if you ever need a last minute birthday card, Elmwood Stationers has many options.Â
7. Casa De Chocolates
Right before heading to the bus stop, we saw Casa De Chocolates one street over, and decided to visit. From the chocolate truffles to the hot chocolate, everything looked divine. If you’re a chocolate lover, Casa De Chocolates is the best place I’ve tried near Berkeley so far and would highly recommend!Â
Whether you need the afternoon off or a break from midterms studying, Elmwood is the perfect place to go! From shops to food spots, it has everything you could want.
