This week’s campus celebrity goes to William Hung, who is known as Hong Kong’s “Ricky Martin.”
Most people know Hung from his rapid success of when he was on American Idol. His comical rendition of “She Bangs” made him one of the biggest stars of American Idol.
Up until 2003, Hung was studying civil engineering here at UC Berkeley. In September of 2003, he auditioned for the third season of American Idol in San Francisco. Luckily enough he was chosen to be on the show in 2004.
Although Hung didn’t win, he did gather a large fan base and was able to secure a record deal with Koch Entertainment with which he released 3 albums. Besides releasing 3 albums, Hung also appeared in commercials, television, and movies.
It wasn’t until 2011, that Hung decided to end his artistic career and settle down as a technical crime analyst in Los Angeles. Hung has expressed that he was lucky enough to live his dream as a pop artist and doesn’t regret anything. Although Hung didn’t graduate at Cal, we are tremendously proud of all his success.
