In honor of the Academy Awards, our campus celebrity this week is Paul Debevec.
Debevec known by many as the effects wizard received his Ph.D in computer science in 1996 here at UC Berkeley. His thesis research was in photogrammetry, which is the recovery of the 3D shape of an object from a collection of still photographs taken from various angles.
In 1997, Debevec directed a short film about the the Campanile that used image-based modeling and rendering techniques to create photorealistic virtual cinematography of our beautiful UC Berkeley campus. Check it out: http://www.pauldebevec.com/Campanile/
Â
Besides working on his own films, Debevec techniques have also been used in other movies including, The Matrix (1999),  Spider-Man 2 (2004), King Kong (2005), and Avatar (2009).
Â
In 2010, Debevec, along with his colleagues Tim Hawkins, John Monos and Mark Sagar, were awarded the Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Â
Â
We are extremely proud of all the successes Debevec has had and with this we wish you all a happy 86th Academy Awards!!
