I’ve definitely said it, and I’m sure most of us have heard the phrase: “Catch flights, not feelings.” It’s the ultimate mantra for the emotionally unavailable, the heartbroken, or anyone looking for a fresh start in a new time zone. But, how can you make jet-setting away from your emotions a real solution?

Just like Lorelai Gilmore, Serena Van-Der Woodsen, or even Indiana Jones, I find myself longing for travel in the face of my feelings. After many trips, I’ve discovered that if done incorrectly, these trips can leave you feeling unfulfilled, wanting more, and searching for other distractions that bring joy. That being said, here are five ways to embrace travel as a way to bring excitement and take care of yourself!

1. Use travel time to reflect

Traveling is the perfect opportunity to clear your mind. Whether you’re on a plane, train, or in a car, the time spent between destinations offers a unique chance to think things through. I personally love to use those moments to reflect on my goals, reset my mindset, or just enjoy the world without the noise. Think about making mental progress as you go somewhere physically.

2. Master the art of keeping things light

Embrace the joy of lighthearted interactions and easy-going adventures. Keeping things casual, carefree, and focused on the journey helps me avoid complicated feelings. Even if your suitcase is heavy, your heart doesn’t need to be.

3. Embrace the freedom of being alone

Solo travel is liberating. When you’re on your own, you get to call all the shots, whether it’s where you go or what you do. The beauty of being alone is that you’re not tethered to anyone else’s plans or needs. It’s just you, the open road, and time to connect with yourself and the world around you.

4. Recenter your mental wellbeing

Traveling can be a therapeutic reset. Using the change of scenery is a great way to check in with your mental health. Whether you take time to meditate, journal, or just breathe in new air, being in a different place can help you reset emotionally. Leave behind the pressures of daily life and allow travel to bring balance.

5. Lean into spontaneity

Lean into not knowing! Spontaneous travel often leads to the best adventures with unexpected destinations, random encounters, and unplanned moments that make lifelong memories. When you embrace spontaneity, you make room for so much more.

So, next time you find yourself on the edge of burnout, remember that catching flights can be a powerful way to catch your breath, reset your mind, and come back feeling renewed. But just like any vacation, it’s about the journey, not the destination. Travel with intention, and let the adventure remind you that you don’t need to carry unnecessary baggage along the way. Ready to book your next flight?
