Best Cafes Around Berkeley During Midterm Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

It’s midterm season again, and as I rush into one of Berkeley’s cafes, the scent of fresh coffee brewing and warm golden light beckons to me again. My stress doesn’t dissipate immediately, but I do feel a sense of solace as I take time to destress and take things slowly.

During these weeks, stress and fatigue may seem inevitable. But between a multitude of readings and tests, Berkeley’s cafes offer a peaceful getaway away from all the bustle with a variety of small restaurants and coffee shops, from secluded coffee shops to somewhat chatty and vibrant cafes where you can grab a quick bite with a friend. Below are just some of Berkeley’s notable and intriguing cafes!

Qualcomm Cafe

Located near Northside in Sutardja Dai Hall, Yali’s Cafe offers modern surroundings coupled with warm wooden decor and a roomy interior. It’s a great place to wind down especially between breaks in classes, and with its savory spinach wraps, fruit smoothies, and Firebrand pastries, you’ll find nowhere better to grab a quick bite! Even better, its Equator coffee will be perfect for a pick-me-up in the morning before you head off to classes!

    Caffe Strada

A favorite among many Cal students for its outdoor seating and foliage, this quaint coffee shop is ideal for those who adore basking in sunlight. Better yet, it’s located in close proximity to campus on University Road, and it offers a variety of iced coffees, lattes, and chocolate chip cookies for convenient study snacks! It’s a classic spot for studying, and its free wifi as well as stunning surroundings simply top the cake!

    Free Speech Movement Cafe

Before you head off into Moffit for those long study sessions, why not grab a quick bite at Free Speech Movement, conveniently located next to Moffit Library? From delectable paninis to refreshing salads and a vast array of espresso coffees, FSM is ideal for students looking to grab a convenient snack or meal before study sessions, and its outdoor patio seating can definitely cheer you up on dreary days!

    Maison Bleue

Located two blocks east of campus, on 2020 Kittredge Street, Maison Bleue offers an array of French cuisine within a quaint little cafe, from mouthwatering crepes to flaky croissants and croque monsieurs! If you’re looking for something a bit more fancy to accompany those read

As a senior undergraduate, I seek out all opportunities that expand my horizons, with the aim of developing professionally and deepening my vision of how I can positively impact the world around me. While most of my career aims revolve around healthcare and medicine, I enjoy producing content that is informative, engaging, and motivating.  In the past few years, I have immersed myself in the health field through working at a private surgical clinic, refining my skills as a research assistant in both wet-lab and clinical settings, shadowing surgeons in a hospital abroad, serving different communities with health-oriented nonprofits, and currently, exploring the pharmaceutical industry through an internship in clinical operations.  Career goals aside, I place my whole mind and soul in everything that I pursue whether that be interacting with patients in hospice, consistently improving in fitness PR’s, tutoring children in piano, or engaging my creativity through the arts. Given all the individuals that I have yet to learn from and all the opportunities that I have yet to encounter in this journey, I recognize that I have much room and capacity for growth. Her Campus is a platform that challenges me to consistently engage with my community and to simultaneously cultivate self-expression.
