Spring has arrived and with it so many fantastic movies to look forward to. Here are a few picks for the top 10 movies coming to theaters this spring and summer.

  1. Evil Dead (April 12)

Remakes of horror classics are the best. The updated version of Evil Dead looks scary as hell and will certainly contend for goriest movie of the year. It looks to be shying away from the campyness of the original (one of the aspects that made it so great), but going the straight horror route doesn’t look like a bad thing either.

  1. Oblivion (April 19)

Directed by TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and starring the go-to action man Tom Cruise, Oblivion has the look and feel of most studio-funded big-budget blockbusters. It has a science fiction twist to it which makes it naturally interesting. The film is set in a dystopian future, where Tom Cruise plays a drone repairman who makes a discovery that could alter the war with an alien race and mankind’s future.

  1.  Pain & Gain (April 26)

A bulked up Mark Walhberg, an even more-so bulked up Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a story centered around extortion, kidnapping and murder, and helmed by Michael Bay makes this one worth checking out. Bay seems to be harking back to his Bad Boys days with this film, which is certainly not a bad thing after the Transformers series. Also, adding in that this film is based on true events adds the intrigue that it’s crazy that stuff like this actually does happen in real life. In addition to Johnson and Wahlberg we also have Tony Shalhoub, Ed Harris, Anthony Mackie, Rebel Wilson, Ken Jeong and Rob Corddry.

  1. Iron Man 3 (May 3)

Robert Downey Jr. is back portraying the one and only Iron Man. “Marvel’s The Avengers” was the biggest movie of 2012, becoming the third highest-grossing movie in history. And the second it ended, all we wanted was more. Thor will be coming back to the big screen later this year but we really can’t wait to see Robert Downey Jr. put back on the suit as the Invincible Iron Man. Written and directed by Shane Black, this third installment will really have to deliver if it hopes to top the excitement of “The Avengers.” But with a host of new bad guys, including Ben Kingsley as Iron Man’s arch-nemesis The Mandarin, “Iron Man 3” looks like the 2013 release no one can miss.

  1. The Great Gatsby (May 10)

If you are looking for elegance and extravagance then Gatsby is for you. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless novel has been adapted for the screen four times before, but if anyone can capture the style, excess, and heartbreak of the story it would have to be director Baz Lurhmann. Leonardo DiCaprio is perfectly cast as the handsome and deceptive Gatsby, and Oscar-nominee Carey Mulligan has just the right combination of charm and fragility to play Daisy Buchannan. Plus, the whole spectacle is presented in 3D.

  1. Star Trek Into Darkness (May 17)

Berkeley alumni Chris Pine is back!!  J.J. Abrams’ 2009 revamp of the decades-old “Star Trek” franchise managed to please all audience, even those who had never seen an episode of the original series. For their second voyage, Abrams has reassembled his stellar crew and added a more dangerous and compelling villain, played by “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch.

  1. The Hangover Part III (May 24)

The Wolfpack is back.  2011’s “The Hangover Part II” made a boatload of money, and there is no doubt this one will too. Director Todd Phillips promises that the third and final chapter will deliver the surprises the last sequel lacked. And with all of the cast returning – Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galafianakis, Ken Jeong, Heather Graham, and yes, Mike Tyson – hopefully the trilogy will end with a bang that we’ll all remember the next day.

  1. Man of Steel (June 14)

Dark Knight trilogy’s Christopher Nolan co-wrote the story and produced this new take on Superman directed by Zack Snyder.  Henry Cavill certainly has the look to play Superman, and he’s backed by an all-star cast: Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, and Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod. Everything we’ve seen so far makes “Man of Steel” look like a serious, stylish, and fresh take on the superhero of all superheroes.

  1. Monsters University (June 21)

The long-anticipated prequel to Pixar Animation Studio’s 2001 Monsters, Inc., Monsters University brings protagonists Sulley and Mike back to their college days, where the two were once rivals in the same fraternity. Inspired by UC Berkeley, the Monster University is sure to please viewers of all ages.

  1. World War Z (June 21)

Zombies are everywhere nowadays, both on TV and in movies. But this looks like it could be the zombie flick to end all zombie flicks. Directed by Marc Foster, World War Z is based on the novel written by Max Brooks about an epic zombie apocalypse. The gorgeous Brad Pitt stars as a family man called into service in the global battle against the immense throngs of walking dead.  Differently a must see for summer.
