Ten Reasons Why You Should Love Emma Watson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

As women, it is important that we recognize other women for their accomplishments instead of trying to compete with/tear them down. Emma Watson is a 26-year-old actress, model, and activist. What makes Watson so awesome is that she uses her celebrity status and voice to promote positive change and fight for women across the world. Here are ten reasons why I admire Emma Watson, and why I think you should too:

10. Harry Potter, obviously

Hermione Granger was essential to my childhood. From acing her O.W.L’s to standing up to Voldemort, Watson portrayed Hermione flawlessly, bringing to life a character that millions of people adored. Even more impressive, she landed the role without any professional acting experience.

9. She is in tons of other cool movies

Although being a part of one of the largest film enterprises in history would be more than enough for some actors, Watson has also been in roles such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring, Colonia, Noah, and the 2017 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (just to name a few).

8. She has a BA in Literature from Brown University

While filiming eight Harry Potter movies, Watson still managed to pursue post secodary schooling, proving that her intelligence isn’t just something she pretends to have while playing Hermione.

7. She is a certified yoga and meditation instructor

Uhm, can someone please sign me up for classes???

6. She began an ethical clothing line with People Tree

Watson proved her dedication to enviromental and humanitarian issues by helping design a socially responsible clothing line. In addition, the majority of her fashion looks are consciously picked for being both ethical and sustainable.

5. She is the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador

Because of her impressive campaign work across the world, which includes targeting women’s right to education, Watson was asked in 2014 to become the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

4. She is an outspoken feminist

Despite other celebrities’ reluctancy to use the word, Watson has proudly declared that she is a feminist and that we should keep in mind the true meaning of the word as: “The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.”

3. She met with Justin Trudeau to discuss gender equality

During the 2016 One Young World international summit, held in Ottawa this year, Trudeau met with Watson to discuss gender equality. She even congratulated Trudeau on his gender-equal cabinet!

2. She has her own feminist book club

Watson started her own club, Our Shared Shelf, that is hosted by Goodreads. She chooses a new book each month based on equality, which is then discussed online by the club’s readers.

1. She has her own campaign, HeforShe

In 2014, Watson launched HeforShe, which focuses on bringing women and men together to fight for equality. She gave a powerful speech about the campaign and its importance in today’s world by stating, “I am reaching out to you because we need your help. We want to end gender inequailty and, to do this, we need everyone involved.”

So, HCUBC Cuties, I hope this article demonstrated to you why Emma Watson should be on your list of impressive women, and inspired you to learn more about her initiatives!
