Samantha Schumacher and Crystal Leung: Future HCUBC Executives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

As finals are just around the corner (how has the year already come to an end??), Her Campus UBC has elected its new executives for next year. Current HCUBC Senior Editor Samantha Schumacher will be our next Campus Correspondent and President, and current Director of External Relations Crystal Leung will become our next Treasurer. We know that these new executives will do an amazing job and be great leaders for HCUBC next year. Here is a little about them:

Names:

Samantha Schumacher, 2nd year Political Science

Crystal Leung, 2nd year History and Philosophy of Science

What is your current role with HCUBC?

S: Senior Editor

C: Director of External Relations

How did you get involved with HC at UBC?

S: I initially got involved with HerCampus when I was a student at The University of Victoria because my RA told me about it. I’ve always loved writing so it seemed like the perfect club. When I transferred to UBC at the start of my second year, I sought out the club on Clubs Day because I loved being a part of it at UVic so much!

C: I got involved in first year when I passed by the booth during Clubs Week in first year.

Any memorable moments from your time with HCUBC?

S: Getting together for our winter social and watching terribly cheesy Christmas Movies.

C: I was able to get tickets to Madame Butterfly Opera and review the performance – it was such an amazing experience!

Favourite class at UBC?

S: So far, my favourite class was Intro to Creative Writing Non-Fiction with Kevin Chong.

C: Econ 351 – Women in the Economy with Marina Adshade. I’m currently taking it and it’s hands-down my most favourite class so far.

Favourite Professor?

S: Professor Chong for creative writing, and Professor Chowdhury for political science.

C: Marina Adshade!

Favourite Study Spot on Campus?

S: Third Floor of Buchanan B.

C: Koerner’s library

What advice would you give to your first year self?

S: Meet with an academic advisor to make sure you are taking the right courses for your major, and don’t be afraid to try out different classes that interest you! First year is the perfect time to try new things and discover what you like.

C: Take things slowly. Don’t rush because you want to thoroughly enjoy your university experience.

Any solid post grad plans yet?

S: None as of now, but I do want to take some time to travel and possibly pursue freelance writing.

C: Law School hopefully!

Where do you call home?

S: Salmon Arm, BC.

C: Home for me is whereever I have family. I’ve spent the majority of my life moving around so I don’t have a geographical place where I call home.

Where do you hope to travel to in the future, if anywhere?

S: Everywhere-but my number one destination would be Greece.

C: Oh I want to go everywhere! I see myself traveling to the Philippines in the near future.

Favourite Food?

S: Any pasta, especially pesto.

C: SUSHI!

Any guiding quotes/principles that you turn to?

S: The classic: “Treat others how you want to be treated”; and “Happy Girls are the Prettiest” -Audrey Hepburn.

C: Work hard, play hard – I live by this motto. Take every single opportunity presented to you – don’t be afraid of putting yourself out there because everyone else is focused on themselves; so you should be too and not worried what other’s think.

What TV show, movie, or literary character do you most closely identify with?

S: A combination of Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls and Aria Montgomery from Pretty Little Liars.

C: My friends say I’m quite a lot like Veronica Lodge from the TV show Riverdale.

HCUBC will be in great hands. Give a big welcome to Samantha and Crystal!

Emily Morehead is a fourth-year Honours Political Science major and a Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice minor - and the current co-Campus Correspondent for Her Campus UBC! :) She hopes to pursue law in the future and run for office someday. Emily loves taking long hikes up mountains, traveling to new places, and obsessing over cute corgis.
