Canadian Halloween Candies You Can’t Get in the U.S

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

For anyone experiencing a Canadian Halloween for the first time, it may at first glance seem bleak. If the idea of cold weather making it necessary to incorporate heavy-duty coats into your costume gets you down, here’s a list of delicious candies you can get in Canada (but not the U.S.) to cheer you up:

1. Smarties

“But we do have Smarties!” you cry indignantly. Sorry, you’re talking about Rockets. True Smarties are like M&Ms but flatter.

2. Coffee Crisps

The most beautiful candy bar that has ever existed on the planet. A sleek delicate crunch accompanied by an exquisite meld of creamy coffee and milk chocolate. One bite and you will see paradise.

3. Aeros

Bubbles of chocolate inside bigger bubbles of chocolate is tough to beat, but when they put bubbles of mint inside the bubbles of chocolate? Divine.

4. Kit Kat

“Gimme a break”, you say, “we have those in the States!” Partially correct, but the Canadian recipe is different and arguably better.

5. Maltesers

You guys are missing out on these little chocolate-covered treats. The main flavour is malt, which is admittedly a difficult flavour to describe, but imagine if every drop of nostalgia in a 50s-themed diner was condensed into one taste with the power to transport you back in time to when it was popular.

We hope you’re hyped to do some taste-testing now. A friendly reminder to all our fellow broke students to make the trek to a supermarket the morning after Hallowe’en for the best deals on all these delectable treats and more. Get out there and try something new.

Avery is a second-year student at the University of British Columbia, where she is exploring her innumerable and possibly not very practical interests. She hails from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island and has plans to do much more travelling before she gets too tired. If given a choice she would much rather have gone to Hogwarts, but readily admits that UBC is a close second. Her most notable talent is an uncanny ability to quote Hamilton during almost any conversation.
Samantha is a third year UBC student majoring in Political Science. Samantha loves any kind of tea, drawing, reading, and traveling to new places. Her favourite thing to do is play with animals and write stories. One day, she hopes to have traveled to every continent.
