Theta Chi: The Bros Are Back In Town

Theta Chi: A New Frat on Campus

All around campus, I’ve been hearing buzz about a new fraternity being added to Greek life. Well, I’m here to confirm that rumor, because Theta Chi is going to be the next big thing. I sat down and talked to Theta Chi’s expansion consultant, Stepheno Zollos, about everything from recruitment to what they are hoping to contribute to UAB.

Stephano informed me that he was a Theta Chi during his college years, saying “I joined because I was a bookworm. I was pre-med and I wanted to learn good bedside manner, (being in a fraternity) has taught me to branch out and since then, Theta Chi has completely defined me”. Zollos explained that Theta Chi separates itself from other fraternities because they believe in their motto of “alma mater first, Theta Chi for alma mater”. This means that school comes first, and fraternity is second. Academics are Theta Chi’s number one priority, and they acknowledge that without UAB, there would be no Theta Chi chapter in the first place.

Although they are different from the other fraternities on campus, Theta Chi has already established connections with all of Greek life saying, “Our goal is the mutual benefit of the growth of the fraternal movement…both at UAB and nationally…we’ve already extended the olive branch, and they have been nothing but receptive…when a new group comes on campus, it invigorates Greek life as a whole.” When asked how Theta Chi planned on recruiting, Zollos explained that they have already begun gathering names from alumni, legacies, friends with children attending UAB, and they communicate with their chapters at Birmingham Southern, Auburn, and Alabama.

“There are over 700 alumni in the 30 mile radius, so that’s really exciting”, he said. The next three weeks are crucial for both Theta Chi, as well as other fraternities on campus, due to the recruiting process. So, if you’re a guy going through rush, here are some things you should know about the newest frat on campus:

  1. It’s another option, so you can find your best fit (at Theta Chi or the other fraternities).
  2. They don’t have a national philanthropy, they believe in community service over one specific organization.
  3. Being a gentleman comes first and foremost, and academics take priority to social life. Zollos says “We are a social fraternity…this is about being an asset to society.”
  4. Theta Chi doesn’t “micromanage”. Zollos says, “One of the coolest things about being a new group…they get to define what this new branch will be on campus…and it’s their responsibility to separate themselves.”
  5. Their colors are military red and white.
