The Strength in MeToo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

The most important reason to support the Me Too and Times up movements is to let young girls and boys know they do not have to stay quiet. These movements are the start of a changing norm. Women are no longer staying silent, they are standing together stronger than ever before. Alyssa Milano, Ashley Judd, Gwyneth Paltrow, Dr. Ford and so many other strong women have shared their stories. In order for this to be successful, it requires the help from everyone who understands the importance of holding sexual predators accountable for their actions.

The Me Too movement isn’t a ploy to lock away the best and brightest, it is the way to protect the next generation of women and men from the trauma that sexual predators cause. We are finally saying out loud we will no longer be frightened into shutting up. The women who have spoken out are true sheros and should be treated as such. Speaking out is no easy task a lot is at stake for a victim to speak out against a powerful, influential man. The fall of Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Brett Kavanaugh and so many other shows how deep the problem of sexual harassment is and how men have been getting away with since the beginning.

“Me too. If all women who have been sexually assaulted or harassed spoke up, we might have a better idea of how big & damaging this problem is.”-Charlyne Yi
