Pluck, Wax, or Thread Your Way to Perfect Brows

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

Brows are hands-down the biggest thing happening in the beauty world! From Instagram’s perfect etched brows to the runway’s haute couture glitter arches to the girl’s next to you in English, everyone strives for the perfect set of brows. They require maintenance and love, but how do you go about getting the best brows possible? Who can you entrust with your face?! Don’t fret. Read below to get the information you need to pick the best service for you (as well as a reccommendation for a location in Birmingham)!

Plucking: This is where most people start with their brows because all that’s required is a good pair of tweezers, a mirror, and a lot of patience. If you are looking for a cheap or free route, this is for you! It’s simple to do yourself so busy bees might rather take their brows into their own hands instead of waiting in a salon. So, how do you craft the perfect arch?  Anastasia Soare of Anastasia Beverly Hills told TeenVogue.com: “If you tweeze incorrectly, it’s not like a bad haircut. Sometimes the eyebrow doesn’t grow back. Be conservative! And say no to magnifying mirrors. You get too close and can start to over-tweeze.”

My Recommendation: The best tweezers are from Tweezerman, which you can get online at their website or on Amazon and in Sephora and Ulta stores and online. They may seem expensive at $20 a pair, but they come with a lifetime guarantee with free sharpening!

Waxing: The pros? It’s quick and easy to find a place that offers eyebrow waxing services. The hair usually grows back the most slowly after a wax so you won’t have to get it done as often, and the hair might grow back more finely. The cons? The pain might be a turn off for some, but beauty is pain! The hot wax will take off a little layer of skin so you will have redness for a few hours after, and the pulling can damage your skin. If you have senstive skin, you might have a reaction to the service. I suggest finding a place that does hard wax because it is less painful and more precise!

My Recommendation: Azia Medical Spa is amazing for many services like massages and facials, and they also offer waxing for many areas of the body. Here, eyebrow waxing is $20. You can find a place for less, but you’ll have to compromise on luxury and relaxation.

Threading: My personal favorite! It’s big in Asia and the Middle East, but many Americans enjoy the awesome results. The artist uses a twisted thread to pull individual hairs out so a precise shape with excellent symmetry is guaranteed. It doesn’t damage your skin and is very fast to complete. The only downfalls are that some will find it more painful than the other two options, and the hair can grow back quickly. Also, the salons are sometimes busy as they are usually small, family-run businesses, but they work quickly to get you in the chair asap.

My Recommendation: I go to Jasmine Arch Threading Lounge on Greensprings! They are fast and friendly and give me the best brows of my life. The threading service here is $10, which is a normal price for the time spent.
