New York Fashion Week, NYFW, for short, is not only setting trends on Twitter, but in the fashion world. Amazing designers including Rachel Zoe, Thakoon, and Ralph Lauren showed their Spring 2012 collections in the heart of up-and-coming fashion, New York City. Although it’s indisputable that fashion affects trends, runway looks can be somewhat hard to translate into fashion inspiration for everyday college tasks, like class or going out to dinner with friends. Couture is chic on the runway, but if I marched down the street with fifteen layers of tulle skirting in Birmingham, I might get some stares. So, I’m here to take out the hard work and give you some inspiration for fun, fashionable outfits straight off the runways.

Marc by Marc Jacobs

This look is fun and easy to wear. I’m loving the color-blocking of the green and black, and how it’s pulled together with the shoes. An easy way to translate this is to literally use the colors from Marc Jacob’s collection. I love jewel tones like this green for Fall, but it can easily be worn all year round. The black adds sophistication, and the white and color-blocked accessories add fun design elements. Here are some fun ideas to try:

Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera had citrusy colors like yellow and green throughout her entire collection. The rest was taken up by geometric and fun prints, as displayed on this parakeet dress. This look is all about not taking fashion too seriously, so “fly away” with this breezy bird print…and I don’t know about you, but I’m going to drag out these summer colors until there’s snow on the ground. Here are some ways to take Carolina to a UAB football game:

Donna Karan is also known as the designer of DKNY. I would define her runway style at NYFW as “tribal-chic”. Yes, there were primitive influences, such as this spiky tribal choker, but the rest of the look was kept geometric and chic. I love the coffee colors used, and they fit in so nicely with fall.

Here are some ideas for class and your job or internship!

Hope this helps you look fashion-foward and fancy-free! ;)
