Black Panther was released on Thursday, February 15th. Since the release the movie has grossed $520 million world-wide. My favorite parts were the costume design and the quick wit of the women in the film.

The costume designer for this phenomenal film is Ruth E. Carter. Carter is a Hampton University graduate and credits her HBCU for her ability to design the costumes. Here are some of my favorite looks from the film and the meanings behind them!

1. Zulu headdress, worn by Angela Basset, is traditionally worn by married women during ceremonial celebrations.

2. Michael B. Jordan wears a Igbo Mask that usually has masculine features and large in size.

3. Daniel Kaluuya wore a Basotho blanket in many scenes throughout the movie. The blankets were originally worn by the people of Lesotho but the designs are alike to that of the Sesotho people.

4. The application of otjize ( a red paste)  is custom to the people of Himba. The paste is placed on their skin and in their hair.

5. Forest Whittaker wore a Agbada which is worn by both women and men in West and North Africa.
