How Old is Too Old for Your Parents to Accompany You to the Doctor?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

On Thursday I went to see my orthopedic surgeon (I have the knees of an 80 year old) for a checkup. My mother wanted to go with me, and at first I told her that I would be fine alone, but she became so sad that I gave in. She picked me up from school… but it wasn’t just her, she brought my dad. How embarrassing! Walking into the office with BOTH of my parents was not what I had in mind.

We check in to see the doctor and while we wait, we play Crazy 8 together on our phones. Once we are called back into the room and the doctor arrives, my mother asks him a ton of questions and talks to him most of the time. Meanwhile, I’m just sitting there wondering, “who’s really here for the check up?”

Even though I know my mother means well, I think I will go alone next time so that I can ask my own questions and probably not be there as long.

I did get a free lunch out of the visit, though, so that was a definite plus!

So, you tell me… At what age is it not okay to bring your parents with you to the doctor?
