Since 1976, we have designated the month of February as Black History Month. While we often recognize it, how often do we take the time to truly indulge and celebrate? This February I challenge everyone to take the time to dive into black history one way or another. You might be surprised by what you find!
The beauty of attending UAB lies in the fact that we are right in the middle of the Magic City, one that is known for its historical ties.
Here are a few different ways to get into Black History Month right here in Birmingham:
1. Visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
The Birmingham Civil Rights Insitute is one of the best ways to emerge yourself in black history, especially in Birmingham. There are different galleries dedicated to different parts of the movement and traveling exhibits that vary based on the day. Admission for college students with an ID is only $6!
2. See the “Four Little Girls” production at The Alabama Shakespeare Festival
This production will give you a deeper look into the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church and the four young girls who lost their lives as a result of it.
3. Attend a Black History Month lecture by Dr. Imani Perry
UAB is offering this free lecture in honor of Black History Month. Dr. Perry is a professor of African American Studies at Princeton University who has made significant contributions to the studies of race, law, literature and black culture. She is originally from Birmingham herself!
4. A Conversation with Dr. Angela Davis
This event is set to honor “legendary activist, scholar, humanitarian and revolutionary freedom fighter Dr. Angela Davis.” Dr. Angela Davis is a Birmingham native who has fought for justice and equality for almost 50 years.
5. The A. G. Gaston Conference
The annual A. G. Gaston Conference serves to motivate and strengthen entrepreneurs while tackling the concerns of those in the workplace. This year, the conference will feature CNN Commentator Ms. Angela Rye and Social Commentator Dr. Boyce Watkins. This conference is for anyone, whether you’re a business owner, activist, community leader, or just interested in learning something new.
