When I finally moved out of the Residence Halls (I was an RA for two years, until Junior year), I was hesitant about moving in with a friend – I had seen firsthand some of the nastiness that can come as a result. Yet while the initial move-in period was frustrating, both Haley and I trying to get our schedules together, I couldn’t be happier to live with one of my closest friends. Here’s why:

She makes me learn new things

Haley, like nearly all my close friends, is going to be a doctor – the opposite of my Communication degree. So while I read article about sexism in the media, Haley interrupts me by making me learn words like gluconeogenesis (new glucose being made and her advisor’s favorite metabolic pathway).

We hang out

While it was nice having my own space for two years, I’m glad I come home every night to someone I can count on. I also always have someone to talk to, someone ask about my day, and someone “force” me to watch Harry Potter and drink brownie batter.

I wear her clothes

This is super important. I seriously need to go shopping, and having someone who wears a similar size to me means I can put that off even more longer! Whether it’s a hat for fishing, a necklace for a night out, or a shirt I can wear to class, I never fear walking into Haley’s closet and taking whatever I want.

We support one another

After a stressful day, I can always knock on Haley’s door, face plant on her bed, and tell her what’s bothering me. She gives endless advice, and takes my side when she knows I’m right – but she also tells me when I need a change of perspective. Living with someone who can make me feel better is a pretty huge blessing.

We cook

Even though my culinary skills are blossoming like a spring flower, Haley makes a lot of snacks. On a different note, I love finding food on the counter, just out of the oven and just for me.

So anyway… thanks, Haley.
